Sam Adams Light®

Never Say Never

Ok, so maybe every once in awhile we have to eat our words. We swore we'd never make a light beer. However, one day we decided people shouldn't be punished by having to trade taste for calories. We decided to take on the challenge of light beer but it had to be on our terms. How do we create a beer without any sacrifice to flavor that just happened to be a light beer? That meant starting from scratch. It wasn't easy but after a boat load of trials we finally made a light beer that could fit into the Samuel Adams beer family.

Flavor Development

When we made Sam Adams Light we had to throw out all rules of typical light beers. It wouldn't be just a watered down version of Samuel Adams Boston Lager. We certainly couldn't use rice or corn as a cheap sugar source to lighten its flavor. No, we had to use only the core four ingredients in beer: water, yeast, hops, and malt. Using those four, and no more, how could we get the most flavor possible? So, we roast the malt to add color and flavor without adding calories. The particular blend of Noble hops balance the caramel flavor of the malt with a soft spiciness and hint of tropical fruit. Getting that perfect combination took over two years of trials because if it was going to say Sam Adams in name, it had to do the same in flavor.

Redefine Light

Sam Adams Light continues to defy expectations. We thought we'd test out these preconceived notions for light beer and entered our light beer into a taste competition in Germany... with no light beer category. To win in Germany, that was pretty cool.

Craft Facts

When you pour out a Sam Adams Light, you might be surprised by the rich color that follows but it's the taste that will truly change your expectations. That amber color gives way to smooth, malty beer, that's full of flavor but still a light beer.
