Dinah Grossman opened Spinning J in 2015 after five years of operating a pie delivery business out of a commissary kitchen on Chicago’s west side. Inspired by her Grandma Ethel who spent her childhood hanging out at an old school diner, Dinah wanted to create a neighborhood spot where everything from breads to cakes to the syrups used in the soda fountain were homemade and authentic.
Dinah needed capital to tranfer her vision into the vibrant spot Spinning J is today - and she turned to Accion and the Brewing the American Dream program for support. Not only did she find a loan, but a source of advice, inspiration and reassurance that while things can seem impossible, in the long run, making her dream a reality is well worth it.
While Dinah knew a lot about baking, she knew little about business. She’s gotten support on hiring, creating employee guidelines and a handbook and other nuances that come along with running and sustaining a profitable business.
